Some fun facts about Rottnest Island & the iconic Quokkas:
Just 19 kilometres off the coast of Western Australia lies Rottnest Island, a stunning gem in the Indian Ocean. This paradise was first discovered by Dutch explorer Willem de Vlamingh in 1696, who mistakenly thought the island's native quokka's were giant rats - hence the name, which comes from the Dutch 'Rattennest' meaning 'rats' nest'.
This slice of paradise has earned its reputation as Perth's favourite island getaway, where visitors can escape the busy mainland and immerse themselves in nature's unspoiled beauty. As soon as you step off the ferry, visitors soon find quokka's to get a selfie with!
Standing at just 40-50cm tall, quokka's belong to the macropod family, making them distant relatives of kangaroos and wallabies. Their compact size and rounded features create an irresistibly cute appearance that captures hearts instantly.
These remarkable animals demonstrate a natural curiosity towards humans, making them the perfect wildlife ambassadors for Rottnest Island. Their fearless nature and seemingly happy disposition create magical encounters for visitors, though it's essential to maintain respectful distances and avoid feeding these protected creatures.
The quokka population thrives on Rottnest Island due to the absence of predators and the abundance of native vegetation. You'll spot these adorable marsupials hopping through the island's paths, resting under bushes during hot days, or nibbling on native plants - their primary source of nutrition.
Consider adding a beautiful coaster to a hamper or purchase individually. If you live local to Rockingham, you can select click & collect at checkout - which saves you the delivery fee.
