Pack your bags and loosen your belts, because Michael and I, and our kids, are embarking on a culinary journey to Bangkok, the vibrant city known for its bustling markets, tantalising street food, and exquisite dining scene.

As we wander through the bustling streets and navigate the colourful markets, our taste buds are set for an unforgettable gastronomic experience as we try Thai food. Join us as we attempt to uncover the flavours and aromas of Bangkok's diverse food scene, one delicious bite at a time.

And trying, ever so gently, to encourage our younger children to try new and exciting foods with us!

Street Eats and Market Feasts

Our first stop will be the iconic street food stalls of Bangkok, where the aroma of sizzling pans and spices fills the air. From crispy Pad Thai noodles to savory satay skewers and fragrant green curry, the streets are lined with food carts offering a glimpse into the heart of Thai cuisine.

We are excited to sample dishes from vendors with decades of experience, savouring each bite as we immerse ourselves in the vibrant street food culture. The kids love chicken satay sticks so that's a win!

Fine Dining Gems

For a taste of luxury and refinement, Michael and I may manage to try some of Bangkok's more upscale dining scene. From rooftop restaurants with panoramic views of the city to Michelin-starred establishments serving innovative Thai fusion cuisine, the city boasts a plethora of dining options that cater to every palate.

With any luck (a babysitter!) we could enjoy indulging in sumptuous fresh dishes, delicate soups, and intricate desserts, each plate a work of art that showcases the creativity and skill of Bangkok's top chefs.

Sweet Treats and Culinary Surprises

No culinary adventure in Bangkok is complete without exploring the city's dessert scene. We will need to leave room for traditional Thai sweets such as mango sticky rice, coconut ice cream, and pandan custard, each offering a delightful blend of flavors and textures that satisfy our sweet tooth.

We also will try to stumble upon hidden gems – quirky cafes serving unique desserts and quirky snacks that surprise and delight our taste buds.

However, I'm unsure if our sons will be particularly interested in visiting the rainbow-induced -sensory-overload that is the Unicorn Café? The cakes look so good though!

Must-Try Foods in Bangkok

And lastly, here's a quick run down of the food highlights we'd be keen to sample,

  • Tom Yum Goong: A spicy and sour shrimp soup that is a quintessential Thai dish.

  • Pad Kra Pao Moo: Stir-fried minced pork with Thai basil, served with rice and a fried egg.

  • Som Tum: A refreshing and spicy green papaya salad that is a favorite among locals.

  • Khao Pad Gai: Thai-style fried rice with chicken, bursting with flavor and aroma.

  • Mango Sticky Rice: A classic Thai dessert featuring ripe mangoes and sweet sticky rice topped with coconut cream.
